About     No Air Con Night

A prairie fire can be ignited by a single spark. It is never too late to ease global warming and its environmental impacts!

“No Air Con Night” is a territory-wide energy saving campaign started in 2010 to promote the wise use of air conditioning. Green Sense aims to bring out the importance in reducing greenhouse gases and saving energy through this event. By turning off the air conditioning, we hope the citizens to rethink how their habits rapidly affect our natural environment, and take action to slow down global warming.

With the average global temperature rising every year, the use of air conditioning has been intensifying in recent years. In 2020, Hong Kong consumed 4.49 billion kWh of electricity [1], of which air conditioning made up around 31% (1.35 billion kWh of electricity) of the total [2]. Once the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration increases in the atmosphere, it acts like a thicker glass roof of a greenhouse trapping the heat in the atmosphere, which accumulates the temperature of the Earth. If we are more relying on air conditioning when the weather gets hotter, forming a vicious positive feedback in heating up the planet. Therefore, reducing the usage of air conditioner as well as diminishing carbon emission would be a better way to cool down the temperature!

We sincerely invite all citizens in Hong Kong to turn off the air con when the outdoor temperature is lower than 27°C. Take a step to ease global warming!
