About No Air-Con Night

A prairie fire can be ignited by a single spark. It is never too late to ease global warming and its environmental impacts!

“No Air Con Night” is a territory-wide energy saving campaign started in 2010 to promote the wise use of air-conditioning. Green Sense aims to bring out the importance in reducing greenhouse gases and saving energy through this event. By turning off the air conditioning for one night, we hope the citizens to  rethink how their habits rapidly affect our natural environment, and take action to slow down global warming.

The use of air-conditioning becomes more frequent while the global temperature is rising year by year. In 2017, the power consumption on air con is 13.6 billion kilowatt hour in Hong Kong which emitted about 7.57 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide can cause greenhouse effect and aggravate global warming. In other words, if we rely on turning on air con to cool us down, the weather will be hotter and hotter, which is trapped in a vicious circle. So, the better way to cool down is turning off the air con.

With continuous promotion and educational activities, “No Air Con Night” gained generous support from citizens, the business community, education institutes and political parties. With reference to the pledge collected last year, over 100,000 households joined and turned off the air con at home and hostels. In this year, we aim at 120,000 households joining which can reduce 514 tonnes carbon emission.

We sincerely invite all citizens in Hong Kong to switch off their air con on 5th Oct 2018, suggesting from 7pm to 7am the next day. Make a small step to ease global warming!

Pledge now, cooling the Earth!

Do you really know global warming?

1830

Scientists found out the signs of global warming from tree ring dating, ice cores and historical document, revealed that the tropical oceans and Arctic began warming as early as 1830s, because of the burning of fossil fuel since Industrial Revolution.

The monitoring of land-surface temperature predated in 1880. Scientists marked the start of modern global record-keeping climate data. The mean global temperature was roughly 13.72℃.

The first modern air conditioner was invented in 1902 by Willis Haviland Carrier. Air conditioner causes huge electricity consumption. In addition, the commonly used refrigerants were known as CFCand HCFCs

contributed to global warming.

Cooling effect was among 1960s. The global temperature dropped to 13.79℃ in 1964. However, subsequent warming was faster than expected. We never experienced a year cooler than that ever since.

The first World Climate Program (WCP) Conference was held in Austria in 1985.

CO2 concentration at that moment reached 348 ppm, exceeded almost 10 % since Industrial Revolution.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) announced in 1990 that

Global average temperature has risen by 0.5℃ to 14.36℃ over the past century.

174 countries signed Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gases emission in 1997.

The Paris Agreement came into force in 2015, succeeding the Kyoto Protocol.

But those agreements won’t curb warming effectively.

2012

As the earth heats up, sea ice and ice sheets on earth continue to melt. The global sea level has risen by 8 inches since 1880s.

This change is already affecting many low-lying islands and coastal area.

Global surface temperature crossed the 1 °C threshold in 2017.

IPCC predicted an increase of 0.2 °C each decade as greenhouse gases emission consistent rise.

2018

2018 could be the hottest summer on record, extreme heat brings temperature over 32℃ to the Arctic Circle.

Current study says, global warming is affected to 88 species’ Phenological Synchrony. 99% of Australia sea turtles are turning female, caused by the heated beaches.
